Target audience - Questionnaire

I have done a survey on Survey Monkey a few days ago and decided to leave the survey alone for a few days to receive a large amount of people would answer it before collecting the results. I shared the link on several social media sites as well as emailing friends the link discussing what they would expect to be included in my magazine and what design they would prefer. After 4 days I received 24 responses and decided to analyse the results.

My first thought was to identify the age and genders of those taking the survey. I found that 3 people of the age ranges of 56+ years, 45 - 55 years and 37 - 45 years. Also 6 people of the age of 26 - 36 years took the survey and 7 19 - 25 year olds also took the survey. However, the largest amount was those under the age of 18 since 12 people who took the survey was this age. This reveals that the younger the person the more likely they are interested in participating with the Indie genre since the amount of responses received increased the lower the age threshold which is consistent with the estimated age of my target demographic for my final magazine.

From this I can see that though Indie pop is a popular genre it is still quite a under appreciated genre within music since genres such as Pop and Rap are extremely popular within the music industry today. I am happy to see that the Indie pop genre wasn't the least or the most popular genre since it means the genre consists with the unique and social conformity breaking ethos I am trying to achieve as only 5 people chose the genre (comparing to the 8 who chose pop and the 7 who chose rap) the genre is shown as a distinctive and an 'acquired taste' within music industry and so the magazine will appeal to a small yet distinctive fan base within music.

After receiving these results I have no realised it would be most appropriate to have only 1 - 2 images on my contents due to more than half of the respondents voting than they would prefer on 1 - 2 images on the page allowing more information and contents on what articles will be included, which is quite an essential part to the contents page. However 11 people thought that 3 - 4 images would be expected on the contents page which was followed up by the small minority of only 3 people voting on 5 + images on the contents page.

After I decided to look into what qualities people found most important when they consider buying a magazine. After this I found that a large amount of people (6.6 out of the 26 who answered) found that the genre of music was the most important factor for them when considering whether or not to buy a music magazine. However, this is quickly followed up by 5.8 of the 26 who answered this specific question believed that the 'jaw dropping headlines' 'the band or artist' and the actual 'quality of the magazine' effect whether or not they buy a music magazine. From this I can take that the immediate look of my main cover star is critical in having my target demographic buy my magazine as well as the genre being appropriate for the target demographic, which I found out previously in question 1 is.

After receiving feedback I found that the colour scheme my respondents found most appropriate for a music magazine was 'a colour scheme with the use of red to reflect the magazine's bold and daring style' with more than 37% of the respondents choosing this house style, I am excited to experiment with this type of house style and feel that it does reflect the ethos my magazine is aiming for. However, 25% of the respondents found that a colour scheme consisting with blue within it is much more effective as it suggests the sophistication of the magazine which I to want to achieve.
